The twisted geopolitics of the Middle East may be taking another turn. Turkey has collided with Russia, its regional ally of convenience, in the Syrian cockpit that has previously helped Moscow bounce back as a subprime superpower and allowed Ankara to indulge its neo-Ottoman nostalgia. This story has long been triggering tremors, the epicentre of which is Idlib in north-west Syria.

  1. As Syria’s conflict rolls on, a veteran journalist says Daesh is not yet fully defeated

04 Feb 2020 | Ed Skyes, The Canary

NATO member Turkey has long faced accusations of collaborating with extremists like Daesh (Isis/Isil). And in October 2019, it invaded northern Syria (aka Rojava), seriously hindering the region’s fight against Daesh. As the Rojava Information Center detailed on 27 January, the number of Daesh attacks since the invasion “has consistently risen” while the rate of local anti-Daesh raids has fallen. Rojavan defence forces had previously been key in defeating Daesh in Syria, losing over 11,000 fighters during the conflict.

22 Jan 2020 | Ben Wolfgang, Washington Times

22 Jan 2020 | Hagay Hacohen, Jerusalem Post

When Kurdish writer Firat Ceweri was a teenager in 1980, he stuffed bits of paper into his underwear and fled his native Turkey to Sweden. The papers contained titles of his poems, written in Kurdish, at a time when the publication of Kurdish language materials in Turkey was forbidden.

  1. What is next after Operation Peace Spring?

15 Jan 2020 | Stasa Salacanin, The New Arab

The Turkish military “Operation Peace Spring” aimed to achieve two goals – to establish a “safe zone” where it could resettle mostly Arab Syrian refugees who have fled to Turkey and to push the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit, or YPG, who Turkey regards as terrorists, out of the area.

  1. Iran is closer ‘than ever before’ to regime collapse, says former Obama security advisor

13 Jan 2020 | Natasha Turak, CNBC

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Iran has had a turbulent past week, marked by more than a hundred Iranian deaths and dramatically increased tensions with the U.S. As it enters into the third day of protests fueled by popular anger over the government’s handling of a downed passenger jet, some observers argue this is the most vulnerable the Islamic Republic’s regime has been since its founding in 1979.

13 Jan 2020 | Rudaw, Salih Muslim (interview)

Salih Muslim Muhammad, former co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and leading figure of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES), says the killing of Qasem Soleimani – commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, responsible for much of the country’s proxy warfare in the Middle East – will likely weaken President Bashar al-Assad’s rule and render his regime more likely to engage in direct discussion with the northeast Syrian administration.

  1. After the Americans

13 Jan 2020 | Justin Higginbottom, Spectator

I’m sitting under an olive tree about a mile from the front with ‘Agir’, a Kurdish soldier from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The sharp cracks and dull rumbles of fighting make their way to us over dusty farmland; the shade protects us from the scorching mid-morning sun and omnipresent Turkish drones.

Why instinct and ideology tell Trump to get out of the Middle East

11 Jan 2020 | Simon Tisdall, The Guardian

The crisis triggered by Donald Trump’s assassination of General Qassem Suleimani has crystallised Iran’s official thinking around a single, overriding demand: that American military forces should pack up their weapons, close their bases, and leave the Middle East for ever. The odd thing is, Trump seems to agree.

  1. The Dangerous Unraveling of the U.S.-Turkish Alliance

10 Jan 2020 | Philip Gordon & Amanda Sloat, Foreign Affairs

The United States and Turkey are on a collision course. Although the two countries have been NATO allies for nearly 70 years, that partnership has gradually deteriorated over the past few years, as Washington wondered if it could rely on Turkey and Ankara feared that the United States didn’t take its security concerns seriously. In the last six months, however, relations have taken a real nose-dive.
