Connor Hayes speaks with Dr Federico Venturini, associate researcher at the University of Udine, about a recently published book he has co-edited entitled “Social Ecology and the Right to the City: Towards Ecological and Democratic Cities,” published by Black Rose Books. Topics of discussion include the concept of ‘activist-research,’ Dr Venturini’s work with the Kurdish freedom movement, the perspective of social ecology and Abdullah Ocalan’s Democratic Civilization paradigm, and strategies for cultivating links between movements at a global level.
Dr Federico Venturini is an activist-researcher, working as an associate researcher at the University of Udine in north-eastern Italy. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Leeds in the UK, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Transnational Institute of Social Ecology. He has also been a long-time friend of and activist for the Kurdish freedom movement, participating as a member of the 2016 International Peace Delegation to Imrali, and co-editing a book entitled Your Freedom and Mine: Abdullah Öcalan and the Kurdish Question in Erdoğan’s Turkey.
