Chairperson of the Kurdish Human Rights Action Group (KHRAG) in South Africa Mahmoud Patel interviewed by journalist Erem Kansoy.
Topics of discussion included; the campaign launched by (KHRAG) and the Federation of Trade Unions in South Africa (COSATU), entitled “Freedom for Leader Abdullah Ocalan for Equal Peace in Turkey,” and called on the United Nations to take immediate action to release Ocalan.
Through this campaign, the group and the union leaders called on the United Nations to take immediate action to release the leader Abdullah Ocalan in order to bring peace to Turkey. It was announced in the invitation that an open letter had been sent to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
The letter, written to Guterres, stated, “According to the results of studies conducted by the European Committee Against Torture in Detention (CPT) and the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Imrali in August 2020, an immediate action was requested.
Mahmoud Patel is an academic, legal scholar and activist. He is an executive member and Chairperson of the Kurdish Human Rights Action Group (KHRAG) in South Africa. Mahmoud Patel has also served in the past as a member in the Ideology Commission of the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Western Cape after being appointed by the head of the ANC Research and Development Unit (Parliament). Mahmoud Patel is a former Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) operative.
