Urgent Appeal from the Kurdish Freedom Marchers

Kurdish Freedom March braves freezing weather in name of justice

 

The Kurdish Freedom March, which began outside the UN High Commission for Refugees in Geneva last week, has reached Basel on Day 9 of the long journey to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg. Below you can read an update of the last few days, and the messages of support that have been received from European members of Parliament:

KON-KURD march through Europe

On 31st January 2012 the Confederation of Kurdish Associations in Europe (KON-KURD) begun a general march in Europe with the slogan “We are on the Road for Our Existence and Freedom!”. The Long March protests the prison
conditions of the Kurdish Leader Mr. Abdullah Ocalan, who is a key person to the solution of the Kurdish question. The Long March for Freedom started at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva and will end in Strasbourg on the 18 of February. Protesters carry 34 coffins to Turkish Embassy in memory of Uludere victims

Yesterday, 8 February 2012, the Kurdish Community in London held a march to commemorate the 40th day of mourning for the 34 Kurdish civilians killed in a bombardment by Turkish fighter jets on 28 December 2011. The marchers carried 34 symbolic coffins from Amnesty International to the Turkish Embassy, where officials secretly filmed the protesters from inside the building. The peaceful demonstration was organised by several Kurdish community centres in London and attended nearly 200 people. You can read the original statement about the march below:

Jeremy Corbyn MP joins UK lawyers protest at the Turkish Embassy

Kurdish people condemn Eutelsat’s unjust attack on Roj TV

French satellite company Eutelsat has announce it will suspend broadcasts by Roj TV, after courts in Denmark fined the broadcaster for alleged links with the PKK. Roj TV strongly denies the allegations, and is appealing the decision, but Eutelsat has preempted the appeal and has made the decision to take Roj TV off the air. Below is a statement by the Kurdish Federation UK on the decision.

Kurdish tent at Occupy LSX raided by police

A Kurdish tent at the Occupy London protests outside St Pauls was raided on 27 October by police armed with machine guns. The students held up posters of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan while the police officers searched the tent. The Socialist Worker wrote this article on the evening of the raid:

Police armed with machine guns raided a Kurdish tent at the Occupy protest outside St Paul’s Cathedral tonight, Thursday.
