Presidential candidate, Selahattin Demirtaş, the former co-chair of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) is running a limited campaign because he is forced to operate out of a high-security prison cell. Demirtaş is allowed to run because he has yet to be convicted of a crime, something President Erdoğan of the ruling Justice and Development Party is trying change by urging courts to speed up his Kurdish rival’s trial.

Ince promised that Kurdish issues would be solved and second languages (including Kurdish) would be taught in schools if he were president. Current President Erdogan slammed Ince’s visit to Diyarbakir.
