For over five months, the Turkish army has been carrying out heavy attacks on South Kurdistan. The goal of these attacks is the occupation of all of South Kurdistan (North Iraq) including the oil-rich regions of Mosul and Kirkuk. Here are the most important developments of the last days:

  • The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) have called on the UN to start investigations into the use of chemical weapons by the Turkish army in South Kurdistan. The IPPNW member Gisela Penteker called the videos, photos and reports provided by the People`s Defense Forces (HPG) credible and stressed the need for on-the-ground investigations by UN experts. On September 29, the HPG had called on the UN to take effective steps against Turkey`s use of chemical weapons.
  • On October 5, the HPG published a new video showing the use of chemical weapons by the Turkish army in the Werxelê area of the region of Avaşîn (South Kurdistan).
  • Members of the Security and Defense Commission of the Iraqi Parliament have confirmed the use of chemical weapons by Turkey in South Kurdistan. Eyûb El-Rebîhî and Katih El-Rikabî called on the governments in Erbil and Baghdad and also on international institutions to take a clear stance against the use of chemical weapons by the Turkish army.
