On the 28th anniversary of the beginning of the international conspiracy against Abdullah Öcalan, the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) commemorated the resistance against his abduction and imprisonment and called for the struggle for his freedom to be intensified. In a statement on the occasion, the Co-Presidency of the KCK Executive Council condemned the political forces involved in the international operation and paid tribute to those who lost their lives during protests under the slogan “You Cannot Darken Our Sun.” The KCK described Öcalan’s political and ideological work as a decisive factor in the development of the Kurdish freedom movement and views his freedom as a prerequisite for the success of the peace and a democratic society process.

The KCK statement on Friday reads as follows:

“We condemn in the strongest terms all political forces involved in the international conspiracy against Rêber Apo [Leader Abdullah Öcalan]. With gratitude and respect, we commemorate the martyrs of the ‘You Cannot Darken Our Sun’ resistance, who erected a barricade of fire against the conspiracy.

The international conspirators sought to eliminate Rêber Apo, who aimed to change the fate of the Middle East, whose peoples have endured a difficult fate for centuries. Rêber Apo pursued a policy aimed at resolving the Kurdish question—which had become an inextricable knot and a shackle for the states of the Middle East—on a democratic basis and in the spirit of fraternity among peoples.

This struggle led to significant developments in the states that hold Kurdistan under their rule. This alarmed the forces that had divided Kurdistan into four parts in order to maintain their dominance in the Middle East. The international powers saw the weakening of their allies by the Kurdish freedom movement led by Rêber Apo as a major threat to their hegemony and organized an unprecedented conspiracy.

An unrelenting struggle against the conspiracy

Through this conspiracy, they sought to break Rêber Apo’s influence either by physically eliminating him or by neutralizing him ideologically and politically. However, they encountered the determined resistance of our people, particularly through the actions carried out under the slogan ‘You Cannot Darken Our Sun.’ This marked the beginning of the failure of the international conspiracy.

After his physical elimination was prevented, Rêber Apo continued the struggle against the conspiracy on Imrali at the ideological and political level. Our freedom movement and our people rallied around their leader and rendered the conspiracy largely ineffective. Our movement further developed its struggle. Resistance in all four parts of Kurdistan turned the Kurds into a force that could no longer be denied. If they have today become a significant force in the Middle East, it is through the unrelenting struggle against the international conspiracy.

In his defense submission to the European Court of Human Rights, Rêber Apo stated during the early years of his imprisonment: ‘Historical conspiracies cannot stop developments; they only accelerate them.’ The development of our freedom struggle in all four parts of Kurdistan has confirmed this assessment.

Undoubtedly, Rêber Apo’s imprisonment continues. Yet he has achieved an immense ideological and theoretical development of a kind that no one in freedom has been able to accomplish, and has shown humanity the path to liberation. Through his defense writings and the Manifesto for a Democratic Society, he has dealt a fatal blow to the system of capitalist modernity, which is increasingly destroying society and humanity. The history of overcoming capitalism in human life will now be written. Democratic socialism, based on the paradigm of women’s liberation, ecology and democratic society, will bring this about.

The conspiracy was directed against all peoples of the Middle East

Rêber Apo’s Manifesto for a Democratic Society points the way not only for the Kurdish people but for all humanity in the struggle for a free and democratic life. A multifaceted question such as the Kurdish question, which has acquired an international dimension, can only be resolved through a far-reaching ideological and political perspective. The gravity of the problems facing Kurdistan and the Middle East has made Rêber Apo a leader for the liberation of all humanity. Neither the problems of the peoples of the Middle East nor those of the Kurdish people, who face the threat of genocide, can be resolved through limited ideological and political approaches.

The international conspiracy was therefore directed, through the Kurds, against all the peoples of the Middle East. Through his paradigm of women’s liberation, ecology and democratic society, as well as his project for peace and a democratic society in Turkey, Rêber Apo is working to completely thwart this conspiracy. Crowning the peace and a democratic society process with the freedom of Rêber Apo and the Kurdish people means definitively thwarting the international conspiracy. Therefore, in the 29th year of the conspiracy, we face the task of intensifying the struggle at all levels and achieving the freedom of Rêber Apo and the Kurdish people.

If we intensify the struggle along Rêber Apo’s ideological and political line, the Kurdish people will achieve a free and democratic life. The 29th year calls on the entire Kurdish people, their friends and democratic forces to intensify the struggle. Our people, who are strengthening their resistance everywhere on the anniversary of the conspiracy, will continue this struggle without interruption and consign those responsible for the conspiracy to history’s graveyard of infamy.”
