Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben wrote a letter to Abdullah Öcalan titled “You are freedom itself.“

The letter, delivered to the Imralı delegation, reads as follows:

“Dear Abdullah Öcalan,

Years ago, when you were in Italy and the Italian authorities extradited you to Turkey, I wrote that I felt ashamed of my country. Today, before you and the Kurdish people, I once again feel ashamed on behalf of Italy and all of Europe.

Naturally, I join those calling for your release. However, in my eyes, even while you are in prison, you are free; you are freedom itself, which people seem to have forgotten.”
