Baku, Azerbaijan • November 18-22

We’re on the ground in Baku, Azerbaijan this week to report on the COP29 United Nations climate summit. Hopefully you’ve been able to catch some of our interviews with climate justice activists, negotiators and journalists about the climate emergency and what a second Trump administration may mean for our future.

On Monday we brought you voices of climate activists from across the globe. They were protesting in the halls of the COP to demand trillions in climate financing for the Global South to speed up the transition to clean energy.

On Tuesday we covered the ongoing crackdown on human rights defenders and journalists here in Azerbaijan with Zhala Bayramova. Her father, Gubad Ibadoghlu, is an anti-corruption economist who’s called for greater transparency in oil and gas sector revenues. He was violently detained in 2023 on charges Human Rights Watch describes as “bogus.” If convicted, he faces over 17 years in prison.

Just today we featured an interview with Colombia’s Environment Minister Susana Muhamad, who calls the return of Donald Trump to the White House “a disaster for global climate” and discusses Colombia’s plan to phase out fossil fuels despite being a major exporter of coal.

Throughout our week in Azerbaijan reporting on COP29, we’ve continued to bring you the latest on President-elect Trump’s cabinet picks with news headlines and in-depth interviews.

Stay up to date with our latest on the incoming Trump administration and his nominees here.
